Season Vining| Author Interview

As part of the blog tour hosted by StarAngels’ Reviews, I got the chance to ask Season a few questions. You can find the review of her debut novel, Beautiful Addictions, here.

Hi, Season! Let’s get to know you. Tells us 2 things you love and 2 things you hate.
Oh, this is easy. I love Thai food and corgis (especially my corgi, Chap). I hate clowns and cheese. You read that right. I hate cheese. Everyone thinks I’m a freak when I say this. It’s almost as bad as declaring yourself a vegan to a room full of cowboys. It just doesn’t compute.

Your debut novel, Beautiful Addictions, deals with some heavy themes like abuse and addiction. Where did you draw inspiration for those?
I had a blog post on this not long ago. I take inspiration from real people in my life, from movies, from the local news, from dreams–basically, anywhere that offers some sort of emotional reaction. While I don’t personally know anyone who has suffered like Josie has, I know they exist. It saddens me and inspires me to tell their story.

What was your favorite character to write?
I loved writing Alex. He is such a walking contradiction. I think we all know someone like him–a perceived bad boy who is an enormous flirt and protective of his friends. Alex’s kind of arrogance was so much fun to write.

How long did it take to write your novel and how many drafts?
Wow. I’m not even sure. The original draft took about three months. But, after that I worked on it off and on for two years. Being a new writer, I wasn’t in the habit of keeping separate drafts, so I’m not sure the total number. If I had to guess, I’d say it is somewhere around six or seven.

Have you always known you want to be a writer?
Absolutely not. I’ve written poetry as long as I can remember. It wasn’t until the last five years that I started penning longer stories. I kind of fell into it and realized that the more I wrote, the more I liked it. I started attending writers’ conferences and joined a local writers’ group to learn as much as possible.

What’s your writing process? Do you use any special software like Scrivener? Were there any books that helped you while writing?
I don’t use any kind of special software. I write on a 13″ MacBook Pro using the program Pages. My love for Macs came from my graphic designer background. I’ve read a few books about how to be a better writer. My favorite was Stephen King’s On Writing.

Is there anything you’ll like to add? Any advice for aspiring writers?
I’m fairly new to the writing game and am still learning every day. The only advice I have is to work hard at your writing. The best tool to have is not a huge social media platform or friends in the business, it’s an amazing story told in your best voice. The only way to get what you want is to invest yourself in it wholly.

Thank you, Season, for answering all of my questions and I wish all the best with promoting your novel!

Summary: Josie Banks is a girl without a past.  After being found unconscious with no memory, she was shuffled in and out of foster homes where she suffered years of abuse. An experience that left her broken, damaged, and clinging to drugs and meaningless hook-ups to numb her pain.

When Josie disappeared years ago, she took a piece of Tristan with her.  She’s the girl he thought he lost forever—the one he’s never been able to forget.  Now a twist of fate has brought them back together, and he never wants to let her out of his inked arms again.  But Tristan is haunted by a dark past of his own.  On the run from ruthless criminals that shattered Josie’s world years ago, reentering her life puts them both in danger.

As Josie and Tristan’s lives become tangled once again, they find themselves unwilling and unable to escape the relentless pull that draws them together.  But will the past leave their love in ruins—or bind them together for a lifetime?
